While reading ââ¬Å"Ways of Seeingâ⬠I see that most people need to understand the true meaning of art. Art is painting, drawings, sculptures, and etc. Art can be formed in many shapes or sizes. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak. â⬠When Berger states that children look and recognizes before it can speak shows a lot with art. With seeing two types of love in a picture one way it can be smiling and happy and as soon as you flip the picture upside down you see frowns. Why does art mean so much to the world? John Berger claims that art carters to the tastes and interest of the rich. In which way is this false? When Berger made this statement made me believe that he only have one mind set and it is for the rich. When going to really nice art galleries to see very nice picture they are usually expensive, why? I say they its very expensive when most very good paintings have a copyrights to the picture. Which means that no one can claim this painting without permission or also repaint this painting in the exact same way that the copyright is made like. When good paintings takes a while to think of thoughts deep within for the works of art. Sometimes art can be assumed to be high price because the venue it is placed at. I firmly believe that his statement was false because art is not only made for the rich and wealthy people. Art is made for everyone to learn to stimulate their minds to go into a different form of thoughts. Itââ¬â¢s mainly formed to look outside the box. when being lower class, middle class, high class, rich or poor doesnââ¬â¢t matter your train of thought because with being any class you can look at the same picture and get the same thought as a rich person. The art galleries and painting can be arranged from high prices so that the artist can get over on the buyer to get more money. Most paintings can be so simply and price ranges can be from One Hundred Dollars and up, why because most times the artist claims they spend several hours painting or drawing so they should be able to charge more. The artist wants to be paid for the labor and the money they had to use to for all the materials like frame and paint and the utensils. I strongly believe that art is not only catered to the tastes and interest of the rich. It is created because it comes from their heart and mind of the artistic creators. Poor people are a form of art because they have nothing to show but what they have left which is their self. When looking at poor people you can see a picture of them that stays in your head. Berger thinks that it is basically weird that you can take a picture on any device it was taken on and you can travel with it anywhere. Taken from their African homelands and thrust into the Americas, Black slaves labored under the hot Western sun to produce cash crops to add to the coffers of others. The slaves had no economic incentive to produce for their masters. To provide the necessary motivation, the slave masters relied above all on violence to coerce their slaves into labor. The slave trade and the production of cash crops created great wealth and was of great benefit to men on either side of the Atlantic, with the notable exception of the individuals who actually performed the labor. The history of Africans in the Americas is as much a history of slavery as it is a history of resistance to enslavement. From the moment they set foot on American soil, Africans plotted against their masters. Haiti and Brazil were two regions where slavery was as especially important as it was harsh. An African, upon touching Brazilian soil, had a life expectancy of sixteen years-eight years if he was sentenced carrying coffee. (Conrad 125) One third of all Haitian slaves died within several years. (Klubock) Both nations offer countless tales of Black resistance to White domination. Revolutionary action was often connected to religious practice, which slaves had to conduct in secret. African slaves also sought ways to maintain their African culture through secret dances and religious ceremonies, as well as the flight to mock African communities in the Americas to escape bondage. Manumission was also not uncommon as a relief from slavery. In Brazil, manumission was often purchased by a slave who had accumulated wealth on his own. The leasing system greatly protected the landowners against any risks that may face the lessee. There was also the use of wage labor where the rich employed the poor to work on their farms. They were paid the minimum wage and only what was enough for them to live on. Lockean Philosophy in Jonathan Swifts Gullivers Travels Essay
An Exploration of Lockean Philosophy in Gulliver's Travelsà à à à à à à à à à à à Ricardo Quintana asserts in his study Two Augustans that even "though Swift as a traditional philosophical realist dismissed Lockian empiricism with impatience, he recognized in Lockian political theory an enforcement of his own convictions" (76). It may be argued, however, than when two contemporary authors, such as Locke and Swift, are shaped within the same matrix of cultural forces and events, they reveal through their respective works a similar ideology. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to explore the parallels between Locke's Some Thoughts Concerning Education and Swift's Gulliver's Travels, using textual evidence and literary criticism; and second, to compare the methods prescribed by Locke and Swift for education, taking into account some cultural views in the eighteenth-century. The first half of the eighteenth-century, sometimes referred to as the "Age of Reason," marked a "new era in parent-child relations, based upon a confluence of political and religious currents" that radically altered the accepted social attitudes towards children (Braverman 37). The revision of the late seventeenth-century political and cultural perspective gave rise to a new philosophy that regarded children as more-or-less inherently good and virtuous. This milder view differed from earlier beliefs that portrayed children as fallen creatures, who embodied original sin derived from Adam and Eve's Fall. Visual Argument Analysis: Pedigree’s Otis
Pedigreeââ¬â¢s adoption drive advertisement is an emotional appeal aimed towards consumers that own pets. Through an argument based on emotion and values, the advertisement successfully proposes a plan of action towards the consumer audience to help dogs find a home. In essence, the advertisement logically reasons, ââ¬Å"If you buy our food, we will donate money to dogs without a home. If we donate money to dogs without a home, you will save dogs.â⬠Through clever techniques such as direct contact in camera orientation and a personal anecdote of the puppy, Pedigree convinces the audience through appeals to emotion and values that buying their products will, indeed, save a dogââ¬â¢s life. Pedigreeââ¬â¢s advertisementââ¬â¢s intended audience is the consumer public. However, the advertisementââ¬â¢s actual audience can be considered one of all ages and all backgrounds rather than simply the consumer public. For example, a child can easily be persuaded by the emotional advertisement. Once the child has been persuaded, he or she will most likely tell his or her parents to buy the product rather than a different brand simply because of the cute puppy he or she saw on the print advertisement. Ultimately, through the emotional image and story, Pedigree breaks existing consumer loyalty that competing companies have by stealing the hearts of consumers, convincing them that by buying this product, the consumer will contribute to a larger change in the world rather than simply feeding their dog. Also, by using the name Otis for the Pugââ¬â¢s name, an older audience is aimed towards to evoke traditional, and emotional responses. One significant factor to understand when reading the print advertisement is to have watched the move The Adventures of Milo and Otis. The movie, in short, is about a cat and a dog that helps each other survive and find mates and homes together. Obviously being an emotion-evoking movie, it is important when a reader comes across the advertisement. Pedigreeââ¬â¢s clever decision to name the Pug Otis causes the reader to recall the movie and automatically feel emotionally attached to the puppy, making it easier for Pedigree to convince its audience to purchase the product. Through the personal anecdote and image of the dog staring through a fence, Pedigree intends to make the audience feel compassion for the dog and hopefully buy the product that is said to help the dog. The argument is carried out by using an appeal to both emotions and values. The direct gaze of the dog makes the audience feel as if it is staring directly at them. Through this, the audience is put on a guilt trip that makes them think, ââ¬Å"I must help this dog.â⬠If the picture is not convincing enough, the audience may move on to the text. Already a large factor in the print advertisement because of its bright yellow color, the text is an anecdote of the average day for a homeless dog like Otis. The uneventful, despairing schedule causes the audience to pity the animal making room for Pedigree to further force the audience to take action and buy the product. Essentially, the advertisement tugs at the heartââ¬â¢s strings in order to promote the product. One last significant technique Pedigree uses is the final sentence within the text. Through reading the sentence, Pedigree makes the audience feel as if they are included in Pedigreeââ¬â¢s movement of getting homeless dogs adopted. The audience is then provoked to feel as if they can contribute their part in the movement if they buy the product to help animals find ââ¬Å"loving homes.â⬠All in all, Pedigree utilizes appeals to emotion, values, tradition, and reason in order to persuade the audience to buy their product. Through these, Pedigree convinces the audience that buying their product will help them save a homeless dog. Pedigree chooses to use an emotion-evoking picture, personal anecdote, background information, and loaded text in order to persuade the audience that buying Pedigree pet food will ultimately help homeless animals.
